Srirama: The Embodiment of Dharma

Srirama stands as an eternal epitome of Dharma in Indian culture and philosophy. The Ramayana reveals that every resident of Ayodhya loved and adored him. The foundation of this universal reverence lies in Srirama’s unwavering commitment to Dharma. Sage Valmiki extols him – ramo vigrahavan dharmaha (Srirama is Dharma personified)

Srirama possessed innumerable Kalyana Gunas – auspicious qualities – that endeared him to all. Valmiki describes him as Purvabhashi, one who speaks first and kindly to others; Mitabhashi, one whose speech is measured and truthful; and Satya Parakrama, one whose valor is rooted in truth. He is also Sharanagata Vatsala, showing deep compassion and affection for all who seek refuge in him. Yet above all these virtues, it is his steadfast adherence to Dharma that makes him eternally venerable.

If we go through the vast Vedic literature, we find that it is Dharma that is the central theme in Sanatana Dharma. The seers of the yore strived to know Dharma and put it into practice. In the Mahabharata, Yudhishthira is revered as Dharmaraja for his commitment to Dharma. Similarly, Srirama’s life exemplifies Dharma in thought, word, and deed. This is why he is worshipped in every household across India even today. One can scarcely find a village in the entire length and breadth of the country without a shrine dedicated to Sri Rama.

Thus, Srirama is a timeless ideal. May his lofty principles inspire us, and may we dedicate our lives to understanding and upholding Dharma as he did.
