The bear has become pure violence and has completely lost itself in the process. The tiger is the judge, but not of strength. Of truth. These aren’t just battles. They feel like spiritual trials.

What also stands out is that Sriman doesn’t kill his enemies. He disables them. He feels compassion for them. He sees them as people who were once something else, before fear and pain changed them. That choice of mercy over revenge is what makes this story emotionally mature and different.

Then there’s Eluka Elizabeth, the tiny mouse companion. When she first appears, she seems like she’s just there for comic relief. But slowly, quietly, she becomes one of the most important characters in the entire story. She never takes the spotlight from Sriman, but she makes everything possible. She finds hidden passages, creates distractions, protects Sriman when he meditates, and keeps fighting even when she’s badly injured. By the end, when she makes her final sacrifice, it doesn’t feel dramatic or forced; it feels real and earned. Her last words, hoping to see Sriman and Chelli together, and her blessing for their unborn child, are genuinely moving. You don’t remember Eluka because she was powerful. You remember her because she was brave even when she was small and fragile.

The love story between Sriman and Nakka Chelli is also handled with a lot of restraint and honesty. There are no over-the-top romantic speeches. Instead, love is shown through searching, waiting, remembering, and finally reuniting. When Sriman finally whispers her name, and she opens her eyes and says, “Marjalam?” it feels deep because the story has made you wait for it. His response, “You left a trail in my chest”, says more than any long declaration could.

The discovery that Chelli is pregnant adds another layer to the story. Now Sriman isn’t just trying to save the woman he loves. He’s trying to protect the future. And the ending, where their son is named Elizaman Marjalam in honour of Eluka Elizabeth, is a beautiful and touching tribute.

One of the most unusual and interesting aspects of the book is how it mixes mythology, science, and spirituality together. You’ll find references to quantum physics and Richard Feynman sitting right next to ancient mantras and the sage Vashishta Maharshi. It creates a world that feels both futuristic and timeless.

The writing style is poetic and thoughtful. Lines like “silence pregnant with prophecy” or “perfect things can be admired, but only imperfect things can be loved” stay with you. The author is clearly interested in meaning and metaphor, not just telling a fast-moving plot. The pacing works well overall. The chamber structure keeps the story moving forward naturally, with each encounter raising the stakes a little more. The final confrontation is exciting and emotionally satisfying. And even after the big victory, the hidden arrow that mortally wounds Eluka reminds you that sacrifice can arrive without warning.

The illustrations throughout the book add a lot to the experience. They give you a clear visual sense of the characters, the chambers, and the strange dreamlike world.

Even the villains are treated with empathy, which is rare. The fox is afraid of being unloved. The bear has lost itself to programming. The hyena once had a purpose before enhancement changed it. The book doesn’t reduce them to pure evil. It suggests that pain and fear can slowly turn someone into something they never meant to be, and that’s a compassionate and honest way to write a villain.

At its heart, Sriman Marjalam is not really about defeating monsters. It’s about recovering who you are. Every major challenge in the story asks the same question in different ways: who are you when you strip away your enhancements, your shame, your violence, your need to be perfect? And the book answers every time: the ones who deserve love are not the flawless ones. They’re honest. Not the strongest. The compassionate one.

If there are any weaknesses, they come from the book trying to do too many things at once  mythology, quantum science, spiritual symbolism, emotional drama, and fantasy adventure. Occasionally it feels a little crowded, and some transitions happen faster than they should.

But none of that takes away from what this book genuinely is: a story with real emotional conviction. It believes in kindness. It believes mercy is stronger than dominance. It believes that imperfect people deserve love. And it manages to say all of that without ever becoming preachy.
